We welcome enquiries from couples who wish to be married in our church. Pre-wedding enquiries should be addressed to the vicar, Rev’d Michael Eden (01449-678623).
Normally you can only be married in the church of the parish in which one of you lives, unless you regularly attend another church, in which case you can be married there. Regular attendance at a church is usually defined by attending for public worship at that church for at least six months as a baptised member of the Church of England, and having your name on the electoral role. Restrictions can also be lifted if your family has a particular link to the church. If your situation is not clear, you should talk to the vicar.
There is a fixed fee of £481 – this includes calling the Banns at St. Peter & St. Mary’s Church, the Marriage Service and the Marriage Certificate. There are, in addition to this, other optional items that you may require.
Bell Ringers £190
Please pay Wedding Fees to the Church Office one month before the wedding day – cheques payable to Stowmarket PCC. Office open 10am-1pm.
The rehearsal is normally held in Church at 6pm on the Tuesday or Friday before the wedding unless we make alternative arrangements.
If you want them choose two or three suitable hymns. The first is sung near the beginning of the service, the second after the marriage part of the service and a third hymn can be chosen to be sung during the signing of the registers.
Couples are asked to think carefully about the wording of the hymns as a hymn with a good tune does not necessarily have words that are suitable for a wedding. Some suggestions are:
All things bright and beautiful
Lead us, Heavenly Father, lead us
Lord Jesus Christ, you have come to us
Lord of all hopefulness
Love divine, all love's excelling,
Morning has broken
O Jesus I have promised
Praise my soul, the King of Heaven,
The King of Love, my Shepherd is,
The Lord's my shepherd
Printed Order of Service
If you require a printed order of service you must make your own arrangements with a local printer after discussion with the Vicar. If you do not want a printed order of service, the Church hymn books are available (no charge).
Calling the Banns
We are required by law to publish notice of your intent to marry three times, in the three month period before the wedding. This "calling of banns" takes place during the 10:45am service on Sundays. If one of you lives outside St. Peter & St Mary’s parish, banns will also have to be called in the other parish Church and a certificate collected from that Vicar (a fee is payable to that parish). This certificate must be brought to the wedding rehearsal.
You are welcome to arrange your own flowers or use any local florist. The Church does not provide extra flowers for weddings.
Your official photographer may take photos outside the Church before and after the service, when you sign the register and as you come down the aisle at the end of the service. No photographs may be taken during the Marriage Service by anyone other than the official photographer.
You are allowed to have someone to take a video of the service but law regarding the copyright of recorded material is complicated, so please read the accompanying sheet regarding videos. The person taking the video needs to liaise with the Vicar before the service to find out where to situate the camera during the service.
